President Donald Trump has responded to Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro coming to the United States after losing Sunday’s presidential election to Lula .
On Tuesday, Reuters reported that Bolsonaro left Brazil and arrived in the US along with his family, citing sources close to the family. Upon his arrival, the US State Department official gave the confirmation of granting Bolsonaro and his family visas.
On Wednesday when asked about Trump’s position on Bolsonaro’s visit to the US after defeat in election as though he refused to concede the results and sought annulment.
Upon returning from a campaign trip to Texas, Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that “he would approve” his visit, mentioning he had heard Bolsonaro was currently in Argentina.
“I think they’re fine people. The election was very strange, and I thought it was terrible. It’s gotten bad reviews. You look at what happened to their market.”
He added, “I think it’s so terrible to see it. I didn’t take sides, you know. I know them both. I know Lula. I know Flavio a little bit. I know the father very well.”
Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro who allegedly faced judicial persecution in Brazil. “The father was treated really badly. I thought, but I wasn’t involved. That’s Brazil. It’s a different country,” he added.
Besides losing the presidential election, he also faced a legal order from the Supreme Court, ordering him to surrender his passport within 24 hours. The order also prevented him from leaving the country as a part of an ongoing probe in corruption and money laundering.
So instead of complying with the order, Bolsonaro fled Brazil before authorities could enforce the travel ban.
