Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has dismissed concerns about his ability to lead Democrats as majority leader, urging party members to remain united following their midterm election victory.
Speaking to MS Now on Thursday night, the New York senator defended his leadership record after being questioned about growing opposition within his party.
“The bottom line is: first … we’ve had a very, very strong finish here, and I have worked really hard to get the results we got. But second, the issue is not me, Lawrence. The issue is unity, fighting together. We still have a big job to do,” Schumer said.
His comments come as Democrats prepare to take control of the Senate, with some newly elected members questioning whether Schumer should lead the majority.
Asked about Maine Senator-elect Troy Jackson’s refusal to support his leadership bid, Schumer said: “Our enemy is not each other. Our enemy is Donald Trump and the Republican senators who just go along with all the S-H — I’m not allowed to say it on your show — that he does. That’s the focus. The focus is unity.”
Schumer maintained that party unity would be essential as Democrats prepare for the next Congress.
