In partnership with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, the upcoming Science Talk will examine the extraordinary acoustic world of cetaceans and the latest research into understanding their communication.
Abu Dhabi(News Desk):: The Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center, the largest dedicated marine research, rescue, rehabilitation and return center in the region, invites marine life enthusiasts and curious minds to explore the remarkable ways whales, dolphins and porpoises communicate in its upcoming Science Talk, hosted in collaboration with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi.
The talk titled “The Languages of the Cetaceans” is taking place on October 29 at 6:30pm at the Center’s auditorium, and will be led by Dr. Olivier Adam, Deputy Director of the Ocean Institute at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, who will offer a fascinating look at how cetaceans, which includes dolphins and whales, use sound to communicate and form social bounds.
Drawing on his extensive research into cetacean acoustics, Dr. Adam will share insights into how whales and dolphins produce and use sound to communicate, despite having no vocal cords. He will explore the unique vocal mechanisms of baleen and toothed whales, the remarkable songs of humpback whales, and how artificial intelligence may help unlock the meaning of these underwater conversations.
