A natural disaster has been declared in Local Government Areas (LGAs) of New South Wales as violent winds have whipped up a fast-moving bushfire south of Newcastle even as firefighters on the state’s Central Coast continue to suppress another blaze.
As reported by 9NEWS, a 48-hectare bushfire in Lake Macquarie has intensified as southerly wind changes swept further up the NSW coast overnight.
Firefighters are efficiently working along Redhead Road and Oakdale Road to achieve minimum flame propagation, as the fire continues to burn out of control in a northerly direction.
Concerning the current situation, authorities have issued warnings in the areas of Dudley, Whitebridge and Gateshead to observe conditions and to remain vigilant as the fire spreads.
The fire at Koolewong between Gosford and Woy Woy has been downgraded to an advisory level after it burnt through over 120 hectares and destroyed 12 homes.
In this connection, the NSW Rural Fire Service has issued warnings that south to south easterly winds are forecast for today, which could push the fire and embers north.
RFS Commissioner Trent Curtin earlier warned that erratic winds could spread the fire dangerously outside the fire zone.
“Embers can travel over great distances.”
“They can create fires well ahead of the main fire.” Curtin said.
According to reports, NSW Premier Chris Minns said more than 12 homes have been demolished during an incredibly difficult 24-hour period, and it is expected that number could grow.
Residents have urged emergency services to remain vigilant as the conditions could worsen.
Moreover, a natural disaster declaration has been issued for six local government areas after the bushes destroyed a dozen homes.
The residents who have been severely affected will be offered disaster support on the NSW Central Coast, in the upper Hunter, Muswellbrook, Warrumbungle and Dubbo.
Federal Minister for Emergency Kristy McBain said, “Bushfires like this are very distressing and many thoughts are with everyone that has been impacted.”
She further said that Albanese and Minns Governments are efficiently working together to get support to communities impacted by these bushfires immediately.
In addition, residents will be offered disaster assistance accommodation, loans, and any other financial support.
