The European Union has sent helicopters and firefighters to Serbia to help tackle widespread wildfires in a nature reserve in the northeast of the country, as announced on Saturday by the head of the EU mission.
On Friday, Serbia activated the mechanism after striving for weeks with a wildfire in Deliblatska Pescara-an interconnected network of varied dune shapes and woods about 80km from the capital Belgrade as well as other blazes in the southwest of the country.
The head of the Serbian Department for Emergencies, Luka Causic said that the European aid will consist of four Black Hawk firefighting helicopters including 55 firefighters and 24 vehicles from Germany, and 69 firefighters and 15 vehicles from Romania.
Serbia has access to emergency help under its Civil Protection Mechanism despite not being a member of the European Union. According to Reuters, other major wildfires were also active in the Stolovi mountain range in the southwest of the country.
Under the new mechanism, Belgrade sent a firefighting helicopter and an emergency response team to help Spain combat massive wildfires after repeated blazes across Europe depleted EU resources.
