The decades-long mystery surrounding the sudden disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is still an enigma despite the years of efforts to solve it.
Considered as one of aviation’s greatest mysteries, the plane disappeared with 239 people onboard on March 8, 2014.
The tragic incident occurred when the Boeing 777 aircraft carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and suddenly it vanished in thin air without leaving behind any clues.
Since then, multiple search operations have been conducted on the Southern Indian Ocean to find the traces of the plane, but all efforts proved futile.
The recent search operation was initiated on December 30, 2025 under the supervision of the US-UK marine robotics company, Ocean Infinity. In the new effort, the search of the seabed would be conducted over 55 days.
Malaysia signed a new contract last year to resume the search for the wreckage within a 15,000-square-kilometer zone, with a $70 million “no-find, no-fee” payment structure.
In a recent development, the transport industry announced to extend the search for another year as a part of its deal with Infinity Ocean. As a part of the deal, the extension would take effect from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
According to Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the purpose of the extension to “enable the search of a remaining area of 7,428.54 sq km to be fully completed by Ocean Infinity.”
“This decision is a manifestation of the government’s continuous and unwavering commitment to provide a closure for the next of kin of the passengers aboard flight MH370,” he said.
Loke also added that Ocean Infinity’s new commercial contract commitments will require “search’s primary assets to be temporarily redeployed elsewhere between November 2026 and April 2027.”
Prior to that, Australia in partnership with Malaysia and China initiated the searching efforts, covering more than 46,330 square miles of the seafloor in the southern Indian Ocean. But it remained fruitless.
Various theories have been wrapped around the mysterious disappearance of flight. Some theories suggested that someone manually steered the plane off course. Some suggested the possibility of unlawful interference by a third party.
After more than a decade of disappearance, the relatives are still waiting for their loved ones and closure.
