A tragic incident has claimed the life of a man attacked by a shark off the coast of the north-eastern Australian state of Queensland, police officials have confirmed.
Given the severity of the situation, emergency services were called to a boat ramp on the Cassowary Coast, between the cities of Cairns and Townsville.
The serious incident occurred just before noon local time on Sunday after reports that a 39-year-old was attacked while swimming at a sandbank.
In this connection, Queensland police said it seeks to prepare a detailed report “following the sudden and nons-suspicioys death of a 39-year-old man.”
“Emergency services were called to Hull River Heads boat ramp just before 12pm, following reports a man had been attacked by a shark while out at Kennedy Shoal.
“The man was retrieved from the water and died from his injuries.
“As the matter is before the coroner, it would be inappropriate to comment further,” the force added.
Bull sharks and tiger sharks are known to be common along the Great Barrier Reef. On the other hand, Great White Sharks are also known to occupy the reef, but found less common in warmer waters.
